Oats are a nutritious and versatile food. They’re loaded with fiber, vitamin E, and essential fatty acids. This hearty grain digests slowly making you feel full longer while also being a low-calorie food. Oats can add a layer of texture and thickness to a variety of recipes. By using this delicious grain, you can open the door to adding more nutrients, vitamins, and minerals to your daily meal plan. Here are 3 unique ways to use old fashioned oats.

  1. Make your own oat flour. If you place old fashioned oats into a blender and grind them to a powder like consistency you have your own gluten free flour. This is a wonderful alternative to refined flour or wheat flour if you are gluten intolerant. Oat flour is full of antioxidants and has about 8 grams of fiber per 1/2 cup serving.
  2. Use oats in place of breadcrumbs. A handful of oats can be a great binder for meatloaf, veggie burgers, lentil cakes, and traditional hamburgers. Old fashioned oats absorb moisture from meat and beans making them an easy replacement for breadcrumbs. The oats will also add thickness and stability to a wide range of recipes.
  3. Make overnight oats. If you haven’t tried overnight oats yet, it’s time! They are simple and easy to make, just add 1/2 cup old fashioned oats to a jar with 1/2 cup of your favorite milk. Stir and let sit overnight. Many people like adding chia seeds, fruit, yogurt, and honey. The topping possibilities are endless. You can make a single serving for yourself or a large quantity for the whole family.
