Tips for Eating Healthy During the Holidays

Eating Healthy During the Holidays

It’s pretty easy to overindulge during the holiday season. Social gatherings and family time can be filled with heavy entrees and delightful treats. However, if you want to stay on a path to wellness, you can make your holidays healthy and uplifting. With a simple mental game plan and some tips to stay on track, you can move through the holidays with a healthy outlook. Here are five tips for eating healthy during the holidays:

  1. Prioritize produce. Whether you are hosting a gathering or you are attending one, be sure to have lots of veggies and fruit for snacking.  If you’re asked to bring something to a party, bring a dish that is vegetable based. Festive salads and colorful fruit make an excellent side dish.
  2. Opt for homemade. Instead of store-bought sides or processed desserts, try to consume the entrees, sides and desserts that are homemade. This can cut the calorie and sodium content by at least 25%.
  3. Watch your portions. Portion control can be your best friend during the holidays. Eat small meals or snacks to maximize your metabolism. Avoid excess hunger which can lead to overeating.
  4. Maintain a regular exercise routine. The holidays can be busy, but exercise relieves stress and can provide extra energy. Even if you can only exercise for a few minutes make time for squats, jumping jacks or sit-ups.
  5. Focus on what really matters. Food is a delicious part of the holidays, but be sure to savor the family and friend connections at gatherings. By focusing on positive relationships, it’s easy to keep yourself in a healthy state of mind.
