Simple Steps to a Better Grilled Cheese


April 12 is National Grilled Cheese Day. Grilled Cheese is a classic lunch or an easy meal to make for your family. This comfort food might remind you of childhood too. Here are a few ways to achieve a better grilled cheese.

The Basics

Add butter with a pinch of salt to your pan

Flavoring the outside of your sandwich adds a boost to the flavor profile. If you are already using salted butter try to add your favorite dried herbs like Thyme or Rosemary to the pan or directly to the bread.

Keep your temperature low

We don’t want to burn our grilled cheese but we want to make sure our cheese is gooey and melty.

Move the pan

To achieve a golden brown grilled cheese, continue to move the pan around. Try to swirl the pan as your sandwich cooks.

The Add-ins

Try these add-ins to elevate your grilled cheese.


Fresh produce such as tomatoes, avocado, figs, apples, pears, peaches, peppers, caramelized onions, or basil adds a unique flavor boost to your grilled cheese. You can even play with different types of cheese depending on your veggie/fruit add-ins. For example, brie and pears are delicious together. As well as cheddar with pears, apples, and caramelized onion. Spice up your grilled cheese with pepper jack cheese, avocado, and bacon. The options are endless.

Deli Meat/ Other Meats

Deli meat such as turkey, ham, roasted beef, and chicken breast are classic ways to elevate your grilled cheese. Don’t forget bacon or prosciutto! Use sauce such as pesto or aioli to enhance your grilled cheese.
