How to Use Nutritional Yeast

Plant-based eating has increased in popularity. Many people seeking more nutrients, and complete protein, turn to nutritional yeast. This type of deactivated yeast comes in flake or powdered form and is sold at most major grocery stores. It’s easy to mix in or sprinkle on top of a variety of foods. Just one or two tablespoons packs loads of flavor and can elevate soups, pasta, scrambled eggs or tofu.

If you are hoping to start adding nutritional yeast to your meal plan it’s best to start with small amounts. Just one tablespoon goes a long way because the fortified dried yeast has a strong impactful flavor. If you’re using it as an ingredient when cooking it works well to thicken soups, dips and casseroles. It also creates a texture and flavor similar to parmesan cheese. Adding a tablespoon to a smoothie will result in a creamy texture which pairs well with a veggie or fruit-based smoothie. When you are using the powder or flakes as a topping they go well sprinkled on popcorn, hot pasta, pizza or roasted vegetables. Nutritional yeast can be stored airtight in a cool dry pantry for up to two years, since it is a dried deactivated food. Trying new foods is the best way to keep your meal plan exciting, fresh and nutritionally balanced.
