Cooking with Panko Breadcrumbs

If you’ve ever cooked with panko breadcrumbs you might have noticed its unique texture and ability to enhance a variety of recipes. Panko is commonly used in Asian style dishes. It has recently grown in popularity in our western culture because it produces a lighter breading and crispier texture. These lightweight crumbs are processed differently than traditional breadcrumbs. The crumbs are actually flakes that have a larger surface area. They are also drier, making them less absorbent to oil. This airier bread crumb results in a healthier, more flavorful dish.

Panko can be used interchangeably with traditional breadcrumbs in recipes. They are ideal as a binder in meatballs and veggie burgers. If you desire a crunchy topping on a baked casserole or fresh fish in the oven, toasted panko can be the perfect finishing touch. These lighter breadcrumbs can be found in most supermarkets near their traditional counterparts. You can often find whole wheat or gluten-free varieties as well. Panko is a versatile food that can produce a light crispy coating on many of your favorite recipes.
