Vinegar is well known for its use in the kitchen. It’s a key ingredient for salad dressings, marinades, and sauces. Apple cider vinegar has unique household and cooking applications that you might not be aware of yet. Here are 10 surprising uses for apple cider vinegar.

  1. Window cleaner. Instead of using harsh chemicals, try mixing 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar with one pint of water in a spray bottle. Spritz on windows or glass and wipe clean.
  2. Prevent fruit flies and household flies. Mix apple cider vinegar with a little dish soap and water. Leave the bowl on your kitchen counter to keep flies at bay.
  3. Natural digestive aid. Apple cider vinegar can help increase your ability to make stomach acid, which is a key part of digestion. Consuming just a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with water may help improve digestion.
  4. Make poached eggs. Add vinegar to hot water before poaching eggs. A splash goes a long way in helping the egg whites firm up more quickly and efficiently.
  5. Make a buttermilk substitute or vegan buttermilk. To make one cup of buttermilk, mix one tablespoon vinegar plus enough milk to measure one cup. Plant based milk or cow’s milk can be used in this application. Mix and let sit for 10 minutes.
  6. Weed repellent. Mixing vinegar, salt, water, and a dash of dish soup together can make an organic weed killer.
  7. Mold killer. To get rid of mold without harsh chemicals, mix apple cider vinegar with a few drops of tea tree oil in a spray bottle. Spray on mold and let dry naturally.
  8. Whiten your teeth. Mix apple cider vinegar with a little baking soda. The foaming action can help whiten teeth.
  9. Clean stuck on grease from a slow cooker or kitchen appliances. Make a paste with apple cider vinegar, baking soda, and a few drops of dish detergent. Brush on the grease spots and let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse clean.
  10. Bathroom cleanser. Get soap scum off bathtubs and most shower doors with equal parts vinegar and water mix. Spray on and wipe clean, as usual.
