In Perry, Oklahoma, the Ellis-Jirous American Legion Post 53 Auxiliary stands as a proud symbol of service, patriotism, and community spirit. With 19 dedicated members and one steadfast volunteer, the unit works tirelessly to support local veterans, their families, and the broader Perry community.
Throughout the year, the Auxiliary participates in a wide range of meaningful activities-many in collaboration with the American Legion Post 53 and other local partners. Whether it’s honoring veterans at Memorial Day and Veterans Day events, sponsoring educational programs, or lending a hand with facility upkeep, their commitment is heartfelt and unwavering.
Each Memorial Day and Veterans Day, the Auxiliary prepares and serves meals at the Legion Hall for veterans and their guests, following ceremonies at Grace Hill Cemetery and events hosted by the First Christian Church, Ditch Witch/Toro, and Perry High School. The group also joins the Legion in hosting a special holiday meal each Christmas. They sponsor local junior girls to attend Oklahoma Girls State, a program that educates young women on the functions of government and civic leadership.
Education is another important focus for the Auxiliary. Each year, a member visits Perry Lower Elementary School during Veterans Day week to read a patriotic story to students. The unit also donates patriotic books to both the school and the Perry Carnegie Library and contributes funds to help students purchase books at the school’s annual book fair. They even help local families by assisting with school lunch costs and library book purchases.
Support for veterans is at the heart of everything the Auxiliary does. Members help pay utility bills at the Legion Hall, purchase cleaning supplies, regularly clean the historic building, and contribute to repair and maintenance needs. They also support Legion fundraising events and projects-often providing meals and purchasing items like folding tables and chairs to improve the facility.
As a proud participant in the Save-A-Label program, the Auxiliary collects Best Choice Family of Brands labels from members, families, and the community. A collection container at the Legion Hall makes it easy for others to contribute. Save-A-Label funds are added to the unit’s general fund, which supports their many initiatives-helping local veterans and youth throughout the year.
“Our main goal is to support Ellis-Jirous American Legion Post 53 and local veterans,” said Sharon Courtright, unit president. “Save-A-Label helps us finance projects that benefit not only veterans but our entire community.”
From patriotic celebrations to community outreach, the Ellis-Jirous American Legion Post 53 Auxiliary exemplifies how small groups with big hearts can make a lasting difference.
